CHOREOGRAPHER

I choreographed for the first time when I was 15 - 16, a small-scale school performance in my secondary school in Singapore. As someone who is also a visual artist, choreography feels like a beautiful blend of dance and visual arts, and it always felt like I was designing a visual artwork composed of moving human bodies.

I began doing more professional work in choreography in 2012, for various commercial events and productions. My most notable choreographic works were done in collaboration with Singapore dancer/choreographer Magdalene Koh (Maggie), some examples of which you will see below.

empty frames

(SINGAPORE NATIONAL GALLERY OPENING, 2015)

As part of the opening of the National Gallery in Singapore in 2015, Maggie and I were assigned to choreograph a set of 3 dance pieces based on 3 different paintings. This series was named "Empty Frames", and the stage features what looked like a giant empty frame, to give the impression of a painting coming to life.

The creation process for these pieces was a lot of fun for everyone involved, and for a commercial gig, we had a lot of creative freedom to play with. Each piece was given 9-10 hours of rehearsal time, and all the preparations and performances were done within 1 month.

Each of the 3 videos contains more information on the paintings they are based on, the ideas behind them, and the dancers involved in each piece.

fountain dance

(MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL, SINGAPORE 2015)

This was a fun, experimental piece involving the use of water tubes attached to our arms, to create a "fountain-like" effect. The piece was performed in Chinatown, Singapore, as part of the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations which take place there annually. Maggie and myself choreographed this together, and we both danced in the piece as well.

frozen fairytale

(OLAM ANNUAL DINNER & DANCE, SINGAPORE 2016)

A Frozen-themed dance piece for a fairytale-themed dinner and dance, co-choreographed by Maggie and myself. The story revolves around the relationship between Elsa (Anneka Haack) and his sister Anna (Hiromi Kwok), with Krystoff (Amin Alifin) as the lead male character. Due to one of the dancers cancelling last minute, I ended up dancing as well, as one of the Ice Sprites (in white). This was a speedy project, with just 2 x 5-hour rehearsals prior to the show day..
